Open roads - Shooting stars: KELLY KNAGA (photographer) Interview

The road leads to nowhere. The road leads to everywhere. It's endless. It brings me to you. In the dream I have of the Midwest the sky is blood orange and hazy there are falling leaves and snow- white as a blank page. Everything is shot through a smoky lens and everything feels like home.  Back roads and power-lines, highways, road trips, rail road tracks. I want to live in the endless possibilities found in the photographs of Kelly Knaga.

Good Winter (GW): What do you love about photography?
kelly knaga (kk):The small quiet moments.

GW: What do you remember about taking your very first photograph?
kk: Sadly, I don't remember what that photo was but I distinctly remember finding my first Polaroid camera on my grandmother's dresser and some packs of film in her dresser drawer that hadn't been used in years. She gladly gave them to me.

GW: Tell us where you grew up and what you like most about where you live?
kk: Some of my most favorite times were spent on my grandparents farm. I loved helping my grandfather with the animals and working with my grandmother in her giant garden. But I also loved exploring and going on these small adventures alone or with my 3 brothers.

GW: What are some things that inspire you in and around your town?
kk:The never ending back roads. I like getting lost on them early in the morning just as the sun is coming up over the fields.

GW: What makes you crazy?
kk:Lately? Photos of girls laying around in sweaters and panties.

GW: Favorite books?
kk: Any book I can hold in my hand. My (other) grandfather was a librarian and an avid book collector and it rubbed off on me.

GW: Four favorite places?
kk: I'm an outdoor girl so I have to say Nevada, California, Utah and New Orleans – they're each filled with history and adventure. And heat. I'm pretty big on warm climates

GW: What music are you currently running on your playlist?
kk: Tycho's latest is what I've been listening to recently. That as well as Mouth Dakota and Phish. I know, a weird combo of music perhaps. I think I'm really missing those lazy summer days and nights. But Wilco, Built to Spill, Bob Dylan are always close at hand.

GW: Who's photography do you admire most?
kk: I honestly don't think I have a most. There's so many photographers I admire for so many different reasons.

GW: Describe a good winter.
kk: A good winter is one spent in a warm climate.

GW: What cant you live without?
kk: My friends and family. It may sound cliché but it is the truth.

GW: 4 things that you collect?
kk: I've actually learned to stop collecting so much stuff. It's just too much...well, stuff. But I still spend quite a bit of cash on books, music and art. And I usually pick up rocks from every place I go to record a memory.

GW: What do you want to be when you grow up?
kk: Exactly what I am now: A farmer-designer-photographer-teacher. But maybe a park ranger too.

GW: whats your secret?
kk: That I know how to keep secrets : )

when crush turns to like

A puff smoke of cloud floating against a  summer blue sky.  Power-lines, high wires crisscrossed . engagement. pavement. easement. houses. brick driveways. garage doors. opening and closing. I decided to take off work. I'm deciding if i should get in my truck and just drive. a bird  catches my eye in the back yard. I get a false sense of security there. fenced in. surrounded by ficus hedges. camouflage the coming and goings. the victories and heart aches.

Sitting by the pool. 3 books, i-pod, note- book, pen. Sun screen rubbed into the sleeve of ink covering my arm. all those hours. all the pain. art. life. worth it.
the sunscreen smells like coconuts. birds in a palm tree. coconuts. they are wild green parrots. noisy. random thoughts. i tear a page from my note-book and make a paper airplane. she's gone. I'm not sure who, or which one, i just know she is.

Film for the 35mm camera. I keep forgetting the thrift-store camera i bought. I'm anxious to try out all the different lens it came with. I borrowed a  book from the library - William Eggleston photography. i have it next to me. its heavy and reflected in the morning sun. inspiration. the mundane and ordinary find life. you just have to open your eyes. you just have to look.

i follow rivers

(I found this Canon AE-1 camera, telephoto lenses, filters and other accessories for 14 bucks at the thrift-store. Old school 35mm and works perfectly. I won't lie, I'm a  huge fan of digital cameras and photo editing the result. I might even like the photo-editing part best of all.  I used  FX Photo Studio  app on my I-pad to process the photo above. That said , I respect the art, patience and knowledge of those using the manual settings of a film camera and getting cool effects naturally. I'm looking forward to learning this camera a little bit, take a few rolls of film, let the joy and nostalgia course my veins.)

What you can and can’t do. Go. I had love and fear holding me back. A good job, mad love, my favorite team. There was luck in this town and superstition. Maybe it left when you did. The job, the money and the good times Charlie. But there are good songs left to share and wine and smokes and I’ve stayed up half the night writing - my fingers are numb. I could probably work harder and make a few bucks, relieve half my so called troubles. Love wont keep me warm at night. All this chopping wood and carrying water. All this health amongst the sick and weary.  nothing to keep me from running. The moon will glow and the sun will rise and fall. Wherever you are, wherever you go it’s the same. I know this. Streets with different names, shadows on higher walls, whispers from ghosts. What you can and can’t do. let the dust settle. Then go.

baby, Im a vampire- Interview:JULIA TROTTI (photography)

I've been itching to feature work from this young and talented photographer for quite some time. I have been consistently blown away by her use of light and the touching way she displays softness in her art. like shattered poetry- like haunted photographs. The fact she's just 18 years old with so much yet to come.

I'm pleased to introduce: Julia Trotti. She is 18 and hails from the land down under. Sydney, Australia.

Good Winter: what do you love about photography
julia trotti: I love how I can create my own little colourful world, and show people a piece of my crazy mind.GW: do you remember when you took your first photograph?
jt: I don't remember the first time I pressed a shutter release, but I do remember the first time I fell in love with photography. I went on a walk with this point and shoot camera that was lying around the house, and just starting taking pictures of everything and anything that I saw that I thought was interesting. They were terrible photos, but I just had so much fun doing it, that I knew I didn't want to stop after that.

GW: what are some things that inspire you in and around your town?
jt: I live in a place called Cecil Hills and there are all these lakes and fields and well, hills, around everywhere. I'm very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place, it makes taking the sorts of photos that I do so much easier.

GW: what movie haven't you seen that almost everyone else has?
jt:Probably a lot actually, I don't watch that many movies. Every time someone mentions, "oh, have you seen that movie where.." I hardly ever know what they are talking about! Haha.

GW: what makes you crazy?
jt: To me, being crazy is a good thing, being crazy is what inspires me. And the things that make me crazy are the things that I can't put into words and that are really hard to express in a way that people can understand.

GW: what or who inspires you ?
jt: This is always such a hard question to answer, because everything inspires me. I can be inspired by the smallest thing like a street sign or an empty jar. Really, just everything and everyone that I see inspires me. I don't even think about it anymore, everywhere I look, I see a photo.
GW: favorite books?
jt: I don't really read much, but I loved Alice in Wonderland and can read it over and over.

GW: 4 favorite places?
jt: My favourite place is mostly lost; lost in my head, in fields, in the ocean and in the stars.

GW: What is currently on your music playlist?
jt: Amanda Palmer! and the Dresden Dolls. I'm obsessing over them lately.

GW: describe what a good winter is for you?
jt: For me, that would be a Sunday morning, where its cold and raining outside, but I'm in my warm bed, sleeping in!

GW: most prized possession?
jt: I suppose that would be my camera. I don't think I could go without taking any photos at all.

GW: what are some of your past Halloween costumes?
jt: I haven't really dressed up as anything for Halloween, but if I did, I would dress up as a different Alice in Wonderland character every year. They're all so peculiar and look like so much fun to act as.

GW: 4 things that you collect?
jt: Sugar packets, photos of sunrises from my bedroom window, empty jars and the number 52.

GW: whats your secret?
jt: To be able to make something from nothing.

Visions from the Heart: KERRY BALL photographer\artist interview

Summer. Sun. Art.
I'm excited to share with you the talents of a local South Florida photographer\artist. Kerry Ball. Skylines and beaches inspire her work. graffiti and warm Miami nights. Visions from the heart.

Good Winter: what do you love about photography and collage?
kerry ball: i love being able to express myself in so many different and creative ways. i like using my photography to show people the way that i view the world. i like to show people a different way of seeing things, seeing every day objects, buildings, graffiti, and landscapes. what i love about making collages is being able to express my feelings and emotions. using a few bits of scrap paper, photographs and quotes, i am able to express my deepest feelings in a way that i feel people can relate to and understand.

GW: How did you get into making collages?

kb: i used to make digital collages in photoshop and one day i decided to try and recreate what i was doing digitally with actual paper and found objects, etc. and i really enjoyed it. i was instantly hooked and the rest is history.

GW: Tell us where you grew up and what you like about living in Miami?
kb: i grew up in south miami right in between the gables and kendall. i love the culture and diversity of miami. i also love the beach/ocean- the fact that i am no more than 20 minutes away from being able to watch a beautiful sunrise over the ocean any time i want is wonderful.

GW: What are some things that inspire you in and around South Florida?
kb: the city itself. the colors, sights, sounds. i love to get in my car and drive and get lost in the city. i love finding new things to photograph- graffiti, buildings, landscapes, people.

GW: what movie haven't you seen that almost everyone else has?
kb: casablanca! i have a hard time sitting through black and white movies!

GW: What makes you crazy?
kb: the price of polaroid film!

GW: what do you day dream about?
kb: living a relaxing life on a beach in hawaii.

GW: favorite photographers? painters?
kb: cindy sherman has always been a long time favorite photographer. her amazing variety of self portraits is very inspiring. i am also constantly inspired by fellow polaroid photographers (and flickr friends) like whitney johnson, lou o'bedlam, elizabeth soule robert reader, grant hamilton and sean tubridy. as for painters, i love stella im hultberg and audrey kawasaki. i also love the illustrations of danny brito, kris atomic and cassandra warren. i also have a huge appreciation for the work banksy does. i love the way he pushes the envelope.

GW: favorite books?
kb: aside from art & photography books, i love reading travel books. reading about different countries and the things other people have experienced inspires me to travel more.

GW: 4 favorite places in Miami?
kb: 22nd street beach on south beach- my favorite place to watch the sunrise; madroño restaurant- for when i need to satisfy my craving for nicaraguan food; walmart in kendall on 157th avenue- because it's always open and going there is always an adventure; wynwood- because it's the best place to find new, creative and amazing graffiti.

GW: tell us about the first tattoo you ever recieved and the last one up to now?
kb: my first one was a piece of flash that i hastily picked off the wall in the tattoo studio- a crappy cartoon looking sun. i got it the day i turned 18. it has since been covered up (along with my first 3 tattoos) for something bigger and better! the last tattoo i got was a replica of these graffiti hearts that have been popping up all over miami for the past two years. it's become an obsession of mine to find and photograph as many of the hearts as i can and in homage to both my love of graffiti and love of hearts, i got one of them tattooed on me about 2 months ago.

GW: What is currently on your music playlist?
kb: these days i've been listening to kanye west's 808 and heartbreaks almost non stop.

GW: describe winter in florida?
kb: winter in florida is perfect! breezy and in the low 70s or high 60s- you can't ask for better!

GW: most prized possession?
kb: my polaroid SLR 680 camera which sadly i dropped last month and broke. i have a backup but it's not as nice and in good condition as the one i broke. coming in second place would be ALL of my other cameras!

GW: what are some of your past halloween costumes?
kb: one year i was the clyde half of a bonnie & clyde duo costume. my sister was bonnie. i've also been a fairy, a ghost, a witch and smurfette!

GW: 4 things that you collect?
kb: antique/vintage skeleton keys; sea shells; vintage cameras; 5s (5 is my favorite number)

GW: whats your secret?
kb: always listen to your heart!

Interview: Cari Ann Wayman (yyellowbird)

Amongst the ruins of abandoned houses, the wilderness, carnivals and interiors of apartment buildings. Cari Ann Wayman appears to us a lost girl found. At only 20, her photography has already begun to inspire and awe those who visit her yyellowbird flickr site. The Chicago native who says she didn't speak until she was 12, is clearly being heard through the camera lens. There you will find her with maps, birds and struggling between industrial city scape's and nature. In hushed whispers and soft tones she shows us abandonment, loss and secret places. Cari Ann's photos display a raw-talent and subtle beauty that exceed her years. There is much still to discover.
I'm happy to present my first interview here on Good Winter, with the keeper of secrets, known to the Internet photo world as yyellowbird - photographer\model\artist Cari Ann Wayman

Good Winter (GW) what do you love about photography?
Cari Ann(ca) haha, everything i guess. but one thing, well, i like that i wasn't immediately good at it. i like that i have to work it at it, and it's a challenge --unlike art like drawing or painting, which i was always a natural at --i like that i can see progression in my own work.

GW: Tell us where you grew up and what you like about living in Chicago?
ca: well i was born on the south side of chicago, but i moved out to the country when i was pretty young. i went to school in a declining industrial town called rockford. and well, i don't like the city that much actually. i'm moving as soon as i can, haha. it's too busy and crowded and i really don't like people very much. and there's no abandoned houses! but i guess i do like all of the museums. and all the sparkly lights at night.

GW:What's the best trait of a midwestern girl?
ca: we look good in plaid.

GW: Would you share a Valentines day story with us?
ca: uh, er, well i have a horrible memory. and i always have nice valentine's days, but nothing too memorable ever happens, really! the love stories in my life are often somewhat unexpected.

GW:What do you eat for breakfast?
ca: i am a fan of sugary cereals such as captain crunch berries or reese's peanut butter puffs.

GW: what movie haven't you seen that almost everyone else has?
ca: titanic.

GW: reading any good books lately?
ca: i'm re-reading extremely loud and incredibly close by jonathan safran foer. it's one of my favorites. i just bought the collector by john fowles, so i'll be starting on that one next.

GW: Have you ever seen a ghost?
ca: no, actually, which is surprising considering the locations i frequent.

GW: Favorite ride at a theme park or Carnival?
ca: carousel.

GW:What makes you crazy?
ca: like, what drives me crazy? i hate being around lots of people or being forced into awkward and uncomfortable interactions with others. i hate parties. i also don't like when doors are unlocked, when glass breaks, babies, and bells, alarms, or ringing sounds.

GW: what items are high on your want list for your apartment?
ca: i need bookshelves. terribly. everything is all over the floor, ha. also a turntable. also my boyfriend, but he's moving in soon anyway. also a puppy.

GW: Do you play music when you shoot your self-portraits?
ca: yes definitely! it totally helps.

GW: Whats currently on your playlist?
ca: this time of the year i always get into quiet, sleepy, nostalgic type stuff. yo la tengo is one of my favorites. i'm really into beach house's self-titled album right now. also, woodpigeon, vetiver, twin cats, meg baird, and alela diane. oh, and ryan adams is one of my all-time favorite musicians, and i've been listening to his "suicide handbook" album a lot lately.

GW: What is the most important element you look to capture in your photos?
ca: ah, it varies. i just really want to keep in the realm of my particular aesthetic. i want people to be able to look at one of my pictures and recognize that it belongs to me. i really want my work to be particular to me.

GW: Has getting your "look" down using photo-editing (which you do very well) made your work harder or easier?
ca: both- in a way. obviously it helps because i know what i'm going for, but that can be a hindrance too, because sometimes i feel like i've run out of ideas and i'm not progressing enough. i'm really trying not to plateau. i always want to keep going forward and coming up with bigger and better things, all while continuing with my "look." variations on a theme, i guess.

GW: How bout something off topic, like what character from Wizard of OZ do most associate with?
ca: dorothy i suppose, though honestly i only saw that movie once when i was very little because i used to have a pathological fear of tornadoes. but dorothy, you know, being a lost little girl and meeting wonderful people all the time. though i don't often wear red shoes. i prefer combat boots.

GW:Do you have any favorite photos or photographers from flickr?
ca: oh wow, that's hard. there's so many people whose work i really admire, though i'll admit i don't get the chance to look at others' work very much. i'd like to, but i try not to let myself be too influenced by outside sources.

GW: why don't you let anyone else photograph you?
ca: i do! haha. i mean, if people want to. i actually just got back from a photo shoot with saverio truglia. he's a photographer here in chicago and he does some amazing work. he even shot andrew bird (the musician, if you know him) for rolling stone! i modeled for him, with some giant albino ball pythons. it was amazing.

GW: do you look to create recurring themes in you photos? and if so, what are they?
ca: not really. i mean i have vague things running through my head, but most of it is just sortof instinctual and i don't know, i'm not a very "conceptual" person i guess.

GW: In what direction do you hope to take your photography?
ca: well i'd like to go professional one day, obviously, haha. maybe do some fashion-related things. on a broader scale, i'd like to make a difference with my work, putting back honesty and simplicity into art, taking the complication out of beauty. i just want people to be able to look at my work and feel something because of it. i really don't like most of what's prevalent in the art scene right now. it just feels so contrived and forcibly stoic to me. i think every one's trying way too hard, haha. i don't know if i'll ever be super rich or famous --i don't think i fit in well with the "art world" --but i just want to make people feel things when they look at my art.

GW: dream location to shoot?
ca: pripryat, in the ukraine. it was a city affected by the cherynobl explosion and now it's all abandoned and amazing and gorgeous. there's even an abandoned ferris wheel! also, gunkanjima, in japan. an abandoned city on an island! also, the tyersall house in singapore. a palace abandoned in 1904. it's beyond gorgeous. and maybe some of those abandoned amusement parks in japan and korea. and i've always wanted to shoot in an abandoned mental hospital, though so many are getting torn down. basically anywhere in the world that is abandoned. :]

GW: If you could photograph anyone in the world who would it be?
ca: oh, haha, i just like taking pictures of myself.

GW: rank the following: Bird - Jellyfish - crystals - maps
ca:they all receive a ranking of awesome.

GW: most prized possession?
ca: camera, duhhh. or computer, duhhh. but a not-obvious item, probably my big (fake) fur coat. it's in a lot of my pictures. i've had it for so long it's sortof become an extension of my personality.

GW: favorite part of the day?
ca: early morning, when the sun is coming up.

GW: tell me a secret?
ca: there are too many. and not really any at all.

would you tell me if it felt any different?

Ive done good
and bad
learned to wait
my turn
in line
and not get
upset

i feel i
changed
things
with you.
for all of us.
i promised
to be better
next time

there is no next time
but i like to tell myself
there will be
it helps fill the pages
in my notebook

the sticker says
i voted
and i vote
you always
let me.

my luck has
been cold at times
but running hot
as of late

baby,
Ive said to
many things
i wish i
didn't

and i miss
calling her
baby
(things like that, i wish she wouldn't know)
and baby
i forgave you
only
because you
you wanted
it
not because
you deserved it

and i deserve it even less
so, who
are we kidding?

we share things that no longer
matter
and yet it all matters.
the
birthdays
and babies
our special days
just silly games

baby, id say save
them
for the other one

but, baby,......

I know if i say baby again
it will wear itself out
and become meaningless
like how my loving you
looks so pretty on
paper

real life
isn't fairy tales
but should be
it's where everything
changes
even if it means breaking
the rules
to make
things work

it's where i live with you
and force you to listen to
my sad song
music
because
we are just
that fucking
happy
we won

all your pretty things

promises:

'fall back and I'll catch you' that's what was on the post-card she sent me. It's a German phrase about trust in romance. but once she finally let go. I told her that she could no longer have me. It's kind of a joke between us now. because once i didn't have her, I wanted her back. It was a shock to me just how much i missed her. just how far I'd go.
there is no game in letting go, which is why people rarely do. or one does and not the other. or both do and then you're really fucked. just how far will go? why do I always have to know that. we kissed. yeah. we lied some. we won. I think. or lost. and this is whats left. I'm glad the scary part is over. Oh, and what i said before about it being a joke between us. it's not. I just said that.

snow fight:

I am the opposite of bear. I want to hibernate in the summer.
Driving up the coast past the orange groves. less people on the road. the tourists have all gone home. bugs splatter against my wind-shield. when i finally get to the ocean, its flat. So I just paddle out and lay on my surf-board. I ride the wind-chop in to the shore. I'm sleepy from the drive. If I want to rest, there is a motel room close by. the inside looks like right out of the 70's. bright flowery bed covers. in the bathroom the sink and bat-tub are pink. The floors are linoleum and cool on bare-feet.
She lives closes by and if I call her, there is a good chance she might come. We'd listen to music and fuck and then Id be hungry and more tired. the sun.
What i do is, I ask her to tell me about snow. I ask her what its like to sled or make a snowman. then I'm cold. the noisy Ac unit in the room is pumping and grinding out ice cold air.
I pull the covers over us. Hibernate with me.

cake fight:

The heat is unbearable. when i was a kid i never noticed the heat. Maybe because I spent most my time hiding in the woods. the trees covered me with shade and there was a breeze that would blow branches and leaves, making a constant creaking and shhhhh- shhhhhh shhhhh..sound.
I searched for dirty magazines that the older kids would hide. somewhere in those woods I bet it's still there. the magazine with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. naked!. i swear. i found it under rotting ply-wood and leaves. usually I'd just look - put it back where i found it. but i wanted this one. so, I took it away and buried it.
I buried so many things in there. my little army guys, micronauts, bottles, cans, a lighter that i stole from my father, a knife from home, dead things I found. I peed on a girl in the woods. I touched her and she touched me back. once I brought a plastic thermometer from a doctors kit i had when i was little. I put it in her butt. It's there too. dirty. buried. I buried the truth there...... I buried our secrets and lies. I wish it was as easy now. the heat is unbearable.
